There’s no shortage of takes on the collective violence that plagues Baltimore. This struggle represents more than just a massive loss of life or a political talking point that’s used against our city. It represents countless Baltimoreans who have been harmed mentally, spiritually, and sometimes physically over and over again. City residents have carried the resulting trauma for generations, yet this crisis has received far less attention from policymakers and commentators than the war on violent crime.

Thanks to a broader push for mental health awareness in our culture and here locally in recent years, that seems to be changing.

Freedom Jones (or Free for short) is part of a growing cohort of trauma-informed care providers in the city. Free is the Director of Community Violence Intervention Programs at the Center for Hope, which is a community-based organization within the LifeBridge Health system. Free is passionate about helping Baltimore and its residents heal from the wounds of long-term violence and trauma.

In this new episode of The Best Kind, I talk with Free about their heart for others and about their work at the Center for Hope. The episode is on YouTube…
